لقد عانت أفغانستان العديد من ويلات الحروب ففي أواخر القرن ال19 أضحت أفغانستان دولة حاجزة في لعبة الأمم ‏( ما بين امبراطوريتي الروسية والبريطانية. ففي تاريخ 19 أغسطس 1919 بعيد الحرب الإنجليزية الأفغانية الثالثة استعاد البلد الاستقلالية في سياسته الخارجية من المملكة المتحدة. مع أواخر سبعينات القرن الماضي عاشت أفغانستان تجربة مريرة من الحرب الأهلية الأفغانية تخللها احتلال اجنبي عام 1979 تمثل في الغزو السوفيتي تلاهالغزو الأمريكي لأفغانستان عام 2001. وتعتبر فترة الخمسينات والستينات من القرن الماضي (فترة الإستقلال) أكثر فترات الرخاء الإقتصادي لدولة أفغانستان.
